Starting a ballet class when a child is a pre-school age is not just beneficial for developing an understanding of dance, it also benefits many other areas of their development. It helps establishing rhythm, improving motor skills, getting them used to a classroom environment and stimulating both the creative and procedural parts of the brain.
Our classes are playful and fun. We encourage toddlers to explore dance and to learn the very early principles of ballet in a environment that is friendly and relaxing. We also encourage parents to stay and watch the sessions so that they can help the children in their first dancing steps.
Whilst tots dancing is not aimed at progressing students towards grades at this point, for those that want to we like to include our pre-school students in our school performances and shows. Accompanied by their teacher and assistants they get a first glimpse at the wonder and fun that a performance can be. It is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to see their young ones on the stage.
Of course this isn't for all children and so if some are worried or nervous they can happily watch their peers from the wings or sit with their parents. We don't push our young students and think it is important to demonstrate that performing on stage is fun but that there is also no pressure to be involved if they don't want to be. It is important that they find their own way when they are ready.
